In Berkshire, testosterone prescribing in primary care for low libido can only be started by a menopause specialist and may be continued in primary care under a shared care agreement with the specialist (Oxford Menopause NHS Clinic only) and only when HRT has not helped. While testosterone is not currently licensed for use in women for menopause symptoms, it may be prescribed off-licence by specialists for low libido and other symptoms if deemed appropriate.
We have certain criteria which must be followed to ensure we can continue prescribing safely, including annual blood tests and referral back to secondary care after 5 years, given lack of long-term safety data.
